Every year, scholarship money in India is returned unspent. The reason is rarely eligibility. It is that families did not know a scheme existed, found out after the portal closed, or gave up halfway through an application that needed one more certificate.
The four places worth checking
Central government schemes
National-level scholarships are aggregated on the National Scholarship Portal, covering merit, means-tested, minority and category-specific schemes across most courses. It is the single most useful page for any student in India, and it is free to register.
State government schemes
Each state runs its own scholarships with its own portal, its own calendar and its own domicile rules. These are often the most generous relative to the number of applicants — and the least publicised outside the state.
Institutional scholarships
Many colleges hold fee waivers, merit scholarships and hardship funds that are never advertised beyond a notice board. Ask the admission office directly: "What scholarships does this college itself offer, and what is the deadline?" The answer is frequently a surprise.
Private trusts and company foundations
Charitable trusts, alumni associations and corporate foundations fund students in specific fields, districts or communities. These are smaller and harder to find, but competition is lower.
What to have ready before you start
- Income certificate — current, from the competent authority
- Community or category certificate, if you are applying under one
- Marksheets for the qualifying examination
- Admission or bonafide certificate from the institution
- Bank account in the student's own name, with matching spelling
- Aadhaar, and the mobile number linked to it
How applications actually fail
- Late. Portals close on the date, not on the day you were ready. Note every deadline the moment you find the scheme.
- Name mismatch. A different spelling on the bank account than on the marksheet stops the disbursement, not just the application.
- Expired certificates. An income certificate from two years ago is usually invalid.
- Not renewed. Most scholarships are annual. Continuing students must reapply each year, and many forget in the second year.
Apply for every scheme you plausibly qualify for. There is no penalty for an unsuccessful application, and there is no prize for modesty.
Beware of anyone charging you
Government scholarship applications are free. Nobody needs to be paid to "secure" one, and no genuine scheme asks for money to release a sanctioned amount. If someone asks for a fee to guarantee a scholarship, that is the end of the conversation.
